The encounter of two great geniuses of the Carnatic (South Indian) musical tradition, L. Subramaniam and his violin is probably the best known musician of South India in the west. His style departed from the very traditional way of playing to add more modern and experimental elements. Palghat T.S. Mani Iyer has reinvented the way to play the mridangam (the most important percussion instrument of South India), giving an unprecedented dignity to the instrument. In this CD, you can hear all of this very clearly. L. Subramaniam's playing is traditional but open to many new sounds. The meeting between the two masters could not have a better result.
