In addition to its musical quality, this is packaged in what to my tastes is a really nicely illustrated cardboard wallet that folds out into a total of 3 art panels. Whose this artist? I want him to do something for Cuneiform! The music here is jazzier than Planets or Ruins (to name two drums/bass duos), but much, much heavier and 'rock' than jazz. Lets just say that they have their own sound with this set up!
"The instrumental bass and drum duo, Clevis was born in Baltimore nearly 7 years ago, but for the past two they have been pounding their rhythms and pouring their melodies into Los Angeles clubs and bars. Unlike many bass and drum bands, which often fall into the trap of simply making noise while trying to impress with how fast and how loud they can play, Clevis concentrates on the intricacies of their sound, never allowing their songs to become stagnant or repetitive. That is not to say that they cannot play fast and loud, for they do both with great prowess, but they also weave in softer, slower moments, that give a depth and an emotion to their music. The band is comprised of bassist Ken Moore, who has made a sweet science of his strings, and drummer John Enke, who seems more a magician who simply works with sticks instead of wands. Their first album together, 'Subliminal,' spoke to their promise, but their latest creation, 'Amalgamation,' is much closer to the realization of their potential. 'Amalgamation' is a raw album, done completely analog, with no digital polishing, allowing for the true sound of Clevis to come through. Each track is different from the next, but they are all alive with a great energy that causes the pulse to quicken and the head to nod. The album is much like a conversation held between good friends, which while it goes off into tangents, it always finds its way back to the central idea so in the end a greater understanding is achieved."
