Mertens, Wim - Vergessen

SKU 15-WMM 1182
Back in print after being unavailable for years, and sounding better than ever.

In 1981, at the nadir of quiet, interesting music, there appeared a very nice, interesting double lp compilation called 'Fruit of the Original Sin' (see listing elsewhere). On it was a 'band' I had never heard of called Soft Verdict, who played a rather progressive rock-influenced music, somewhere between Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Michael Nyman and Steve Reich! After waiting and searching, I managed to find this, their first album. It consists of 10 musicians on instruments like acoustic and electric piano, French horn, piccolo, bass clarinet, clarinet, soprano saxophone, viola, bass guitar and percussion. I bought it and loved it.

The leader was Wim Mertens who has released many other albums, all under his own name, and none of the ones that I heard nearly as good as this one. Finally this was reissued on CD and it's as good as I remember it, but it's now under Wim's name and not the ensemble name. Recommended!
