Somewhere in the last couple of years, I met Adele Schmidt, a very nice lady who has an office very near our office and who is a documentary filmaker and educator. Her husband is a big progressive rock fan and Adele became interested in the story behind the music; not so much the music itself, although she delves into that, but what motivates people to be so devoted to a music that is basically unpopular and unhip and unknown. On this documentary, which is over an hour and a half long, she interviews a lot of musicians and people behind the scenes of the scene and lets them have their say. Appearing are folks like Cheer-Accident, Cabezas de Cera, Deluge Grandeur, D.F.A., Phideaux, Paul Sears (the Muffins), Mike Potter (Orion Studios) and yours truly.
You can see the Wayside/Cuneiform staff all working away and hear some observations from the musicians who make the music. My only personal complaint is that the best thing I think I said was edited out, but you can hear me say it on the trailer below at about the 1 minute mark.
"Inspired by classical progressive rock bands of 40 years ago such as Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Emerson Lake and Palmer, and Pink Floyd, young bands of today have transformed progressive music into something new. Ignored by today’s music industry but empowered by the tools of the Internet, these young bands are trying to find their audience while crafting a personal sound as an alternative to mainstream music."
