Sonny Greenwich is a little known Canadian guitarist who is kind of a ‘Santana / Coltrane guitarist’ in the same way that Tisziji Muñoz is and with a somewhat similar furious but spiritually uplifting esthetic, except he emerged a decade earlier! This is his first album as a leader and also his hardest to source until this great reissue. Sun Song is his masterpiece of spiritual-style jazz.
It was recorded in 1974 for Radio Canada International, who have a series of NON-commercial releases of Canadian content recordings, all with identical and boring cover artwork, made for airplay, but not made for sale (although they do turn up on the collector’s market). Consequently, unless you were specifically hipped to this album, you would NEVER notice it. But I am telling you right here and right now that you DO want to notice this.
This is the very first time, NEARLY 50 YEARS LATER, that this has been released commercially, and it’s a fully licensed, numbered edition of 500 copies! Originals go for $100.00 on up and I’ve been looking for this, but not wanting to pay $100.00 for at least a decade and now I got one and YOU CAN TOO! Highly recommended.

"With a very personal, powerful style and a sound that always seemed ready to explode, Sonny Greenwich is probably Canada’s most unique jazzman. For his first full album (originally released in 1974), backed by a top-flight Toronto rhythm section (including longtime associate Don Thompson on piano), the Canadian Coltrane of the guitar creates an undeniable spiritual jazz classic."
