"Terumasa Hino is the legendary Japanese trumpeter who has given us countless amazing sessions since the late 60s. His work in the 70s channeled the spirit of electric Miles Davis. This live album from 1973 isn’t plugged in but its searing with white...

Always nice to see bands from AltrOck / Fading finding new homes!

“Homunculus Res was born in 2010 from the artistic union between Dario D'Alessandro - author of the band's music, lyrics and illustrations - and brothers Di Giovanni, with the precise aim to play with uncommon signatures and oblique arrangements, drawing inspiration from the so-called Canterbury scene sound, the Rock In Opposition movement and baroque psychedelic pop, to arrive at a form of melodic, light and ironic jazz-rock....

"The Japanese jazz scene is finally getting the attention it deserves. Long written off as just a scene filled with copycats of American and European artists, jazz fans around the world are now discovering that there was some amazing music being...

This is a rare as hell, Japanese-only release, originally released in 1975 on the audiophile Three Blind Mice label.

This features piano and electric keyboards, guitar (by Kazumi Watanabe), bass, drums, and percussion. There are four tracks...

Indian Summer released one, quite collectable on RCA's progressive subsidiary, Neon, in 1971. It is typical of 1971 English proto-prog, featuring lots of Hammond and a somewhat bluesy rock singer. It's in the same general vein as Spring and Cressida and also, to my ears most strongly, although they never heard each other, the 1971 version of Kansas who had their demos released by us as "Proto-Kaw"! They were very good and very under known.
35 years later, Record Collector Magazine assembled this...

J.E.T. were an Italian ‘one and done’ high dollar rarity that often left listeners disappointed after finding (and paying for) one! Why? Because it isn’t a symphonic prog album, instead it’s a progressive hard rock album very much reflecting the good UK progressive hard rock albums of those times (especially Uriah Heep).
If you approach it with the understanding that this is what it is, you’ll really enjoy it.

“This expanded Esoteric Recordings edition has been newly remastered from the original Vertigo Records master tapes and features an early, previously unreleased version of ‘Telephone Girl’ as a bonus track. It also restores the original album artwork and features a booklet with new essay.”

Mini-lp sleeve reissue of the second album by this Italian progressive band. "DNA (1972) revealed that their sound had matured surprisingly quickly, moving in a totally idiosyncratic direction. Actually, it's difficult to pigeonhole this music...it com...

"...multi-instrumentalists Toby Driver and Mia Matsumiya lull you into a dream state with a small cavalcade of instrumentation, plying an almost noir sensibility at once moody and contemplative, bristling and demure. An unclassifiable masterpiece."

“The duo of Julian Lage and Gyan Riley is now legendary. Featuring a high level of virtuosity tempered by elegance, love, respect and impeccable taste, their work with Zorn has produced a variety of masterpieces—a magical set of Bagatelles, the sweet midnight music of Midsummer Moons and the rocking new band Insurrection. Here they pour their soulful mastery into ten compositions from The Book Beri’ah and their magical interplay is at its most telepathic as they work every possible variation out of these...

Classic, great, early and wild experimental avant/progressive rock band, led by drummer/composer Gilbert Artman, before he formed Urban Sax. Beautiful reproduction, including the gatefold sleeve.

"The first album by Lard Free, simply titled Gilbert Artman's Lard Free, is released in 1973 on the Vamp label. It has been recorded and mixed in April that year, the recording session taking place for only 36 hours in a London studio. But that's enough time for the band to showcase the adventurous...

Mini-lp sleeve release of this, the 2nd, and probably the best release of this group's E.L.P. - inspired albums that this very young Italian band released. A very nice fusion of keyboard-driven progressive rock and classical music.

"Long known as Cecil Taylor's most reliable and loyal colleague, alto saxophonist Jimmy Lyons has a select discography as a leader, and among its best entries is Push Pull, originally issued by Hat Hut as a massive 3-LP set. Recorded during a single marathon performance at the Collective for Living Cinema in New York in 1978, Push Pull features five extended piec

Malibran were one of the most important & most visible of Italy's reviving Rock Progressivo Italiano scene in the 90s and into the early 00s.

It's hard to tell from the promo blurb if this set of rare tracks, which includes some very interesting covers, is the swan song release from them, or if they are still at it. It's been quite a long time since their last one, so my guess is that this is goodbye.

Either way, this is quite a good listen for fans of the classic Italian sound, most...

This Italian minor gem from 1976 - the 1st release on the Grog label - is quite scarse, rather unknown and has never been reissued before! The group was formed by ex-Garybaldi drummer Maurizio Cassinelli and the group was Franco Sandi (guitar, vocals)...

This was the wonderful 1st album that launched this amazing musician's career. A brilliant musician, composer and arranger, the closest comparison I might be able to make is that Albert is the French Frank Zappa, except that that really doesn't do him or his original music justice.
This is a brilliant album, with great melodies, musical surprises galore, brilliant orchestration, & much more. Highly recommended.

Recorded in 1976, this features an amazing band: Charlie Mariano-soprano sax, alto sax, flute, nagasawaram, Zbigniew Seifert-violin, Jan Hammer-pianos and Moog, Jack Bruce-bass, John Marshall-drums and Nippy Noya-percussion. This would have been near...

"Between the 90s and early 2000s there was a real rebirth of Italian progressive rock, which saw the birth of numerous bands dedicated to sounds that were believed to be irremediably lost in the folds of time. Among the main supporters of this rebirth was La Maschera di Cera, a band that united members of the already well-known Finisterre (Fabio Zuffanti, Agostino Macor, Marco Cavani) with the expressive voice of Alessandro Corvaglia, former collaborator of Zuffanti in the “Merlin – The Rock” project...

The greatly awaited 3rd album by this extremely good Italian symphonic/progressive band is a live album. Therefore it isn't really a step forward, but more like a re-evalution and recapitulation of their work so far. "The Wax Mask" are a five piece who...

This is where it all began for this very fine, modern-day RPI band! Includes four bonus tracks!

The homonymous debut of La Maschera di Cera, dated 2002, obtained excellent and unanimous acclaim at the time, and was hailed as the best Italian prog album since the legendary debut of Alphataurus: four long songs in perfect prog tradition, including the long title track stands out, which would take up an entire hypothetical first side of a vinyl record. Acoustic guitars and an incessant carpet of...

To my mind, La Maschera Di Cera are the very best of the classic style Italian symphonic/progressive rock bands out there and every one of their releases has been nothing less than excellent. For this, their fifth studio album, they've really pulled...

“La Maschera di Cera was founded in 2001 as a tribute to the sound of '70s Italian progressive rock, on the initiative of Fabio Zuffanti who gathered around him keyboardist Agostino Macor, drummer Marco Cavani (from his other band Finisterre), singer Alessandro Corvaglia and flutist Andrea Monetti.
After a self-titled debut (2002) that had been hailed as "the best Italian prog album since the Alphataurus era", the even more complex and ambitious "Il grande labirinto" followed just one year later...

"Maxophone is a very important name within the vast world of Italian progressive rock. Like many other colleagues, they disbanded after only one self-titled LP, released in 1975; but thanks to that beautiful album, which at the time granted the band several live shows and even a few TV appearances, we can put Maxophone in the élite of the greatest Italian prog bands. After the recent comeback, we were still missing one piece: a new album consisting of original songs, which finally sees the light here...

Joe McPhee, brass and reeds
"In his upstate NY secret laboratory, home-based in Poughkeepsie, Joe McPhee diligently documented his activities throughout the '70s, with the help of Craig Johnson, the producer who started CjR as an outlet for McPhee's music. Among the unreleased tapes waxed in that span, Alone Together is unique and especially beautiful. Like Sound on Sound (released by Corbett vs. Dempsey in 2010), these recordings make use of multitrack recording, overdubbing McPhee upon McPhee...

Joe McPhee, alto and tenor saxophones, pocket cornet, adapted pocket cornet
André Jaume, alto and tenor saxophones, bass clarinet
Recorded December 15, 1979, Paris.
Originally recorded and sequenced for release on Hat Hut Records, never issued.

"Multi-instrumental master McPhee and his longtime colleague, French saxophonist and clarinetist Jaume, joined forces for this studio recording in 1979 that was prepared but never released. It is primarily structured around pairs of tunes by...

One of the great ones from the Moebius axis.

"Maria Monti's 1974 LP Il Bestario is a rare item even in its native country. Monti is an Italian singer and actress with a noteworthy career, performing as a cabaret singer in the '60s, an ambitious avant-garde folk artist in the '70s, and starring in films by directors such Sergio Leone (Fistful of Dynamite) and Bernardo Bertolucci (1900) all the while. In addition to lyrics by the infamous poet Aldo Braibanti, Il Bestiario features arrangements and synthesizer from legendary avant-garde composer Alvin...

"Nathan were born as a tribute band of Genesis, Pink Floyd and Supertramp, but with “Nebulosa” they have evolved into a creature that’s finally able to create completely original songs: in a nutshell, this is a real turning point in their musical career, as well as a bold step into the future.

Today Nathan is therefore a progressive rock group whose core consists of three very experienced musicians – Piergiorgio Abba (keyboards), Bruno Lugaro (bass and vocals) and Fabio Sanfilippo (drums) – with.
