This is a reprinting of one of our classic Heldon titles which we ran out of a little while ago. The CD's sound is unchanged; this is not a remaster, but it has been repackaged in a way that makes it look more like the original vinyl version, which had one of the all-time great sci-fi covers of all time!

This is one of the classics of the avant-progressive-electronic cannon of 1970s greats, and is a perfect place to start if you do not already know this band!

Originally released on Cobra.

"A reissue of Heldon's third album Third (It's Always Rock 'N' Roll), originally released on Disjuncta in 1975. Third album from the French space-rock electro combo masterminded by Richard Pinhas. Heldon's darkest work lays another stone in their sonic mosaic: synths, drones, fuzz, and trippy improvisations. There's something wicked happening on Heldon's third album It's Always Rock And Roll. Richard Pinhas's essential attack of searing guitar and space-bound synthesizer didn't change radically after...

“After the release of Stand By, Richard Pinhas focused on solo LPs before quitting music for around a decade. "It was the end of the tale," he explains. "We decided to split for many reasons. The main one was that one or two of the other musicians wanted to stop. They were session musicians, mainly. At one point they said they didn't have so much time to give. And it was a time when a lot of bands who had become reluctantly successful decided to split . . . Split at the top, not waiting to go down."...

“Heldon's Richard Pinhas has never been shy of pinpointing his influences while, at the same time, making music that is noticeably distinct from any of his designated sources. He has, for instance, made it clear that a significant font of inspiration was Robert Fripp's guitar style and melding of rock music with cutting-edge electronics (especially in collaboration with Brian Eno). Pinhas first met Fripp in 1974, and the pair became friends and have remained in contact ever since. Pinhas was even...

Mark Helias: Bass
Tony Malaby: Saxophone
Tom Rainey: Drums

"Everybody who is slightly interested in modern jazz knows the name of Mark Helias. The American double bass player has worked with everyone from Ed Blackwell, Don Cherry and...

Great, funny cover (open it up). "Hella's aptly titled Acoustics EP consists of six acoustic renditions of previously released songs, recorded by a version of the group that doesn't really exist anymore. In other words, this release might seem to be the..

Jonas Hellborg, bassist extra-ordinaire, brings together a wide variety of players here: metal/stunt guitarist Mattias IA Eklunch, Stratovarius/Mastermind keyboardist Jens Johansson, drummer Anders Johansson, Remember Shakti percussionist Selvaganesh...

Another excellent, mostly high-voltage meeting of fusion with Indian music and musicians. "It is an experiment, Jonas says about the power trio of V Selvaganesh - ghatam God Vikku Vinayakram's son - on the kanjira, Niladri and he are recording for. Sel...

Yeah, solo acoustic folk bass is a very specialized thing, but this was recorded at one of Hellborg's peaks (see below) so, if this is your kinda specialized thing, this will blow you away!

"The Silent Life is a solo bass album recorded by...

"14 years ago I felt it was time for another installment in my ongoing collaboration with Michael Shrieve, the legendary drummer of the Santana Band. I had also just heard a tape at Bill Laswell's house of Buckethead, an exciting new guitarist who has...

This is the first record by Hellborg/Lane that I ever heard; I bought it on the recommendation of Shawn Pergsinger of Boud Deun, and he wasn't wrong...pretty incredible improvised fusion from the late (amazing) guitarist Shawn Lane, bassist Jonas Hellb...

Recorded live in Germany, this is one of the hottest power trio fusion releases that I can think of. As the man says, "Quite simply one of the most incendiary fusion albums I've ever heard and a disc that dares you to remove it from your CD player. Cer...

Hellborg plays an acoustic bass guitar, Shawn plays acoustic, and they are joined by Remember Shakti member V. Selvagenesh on udu (Indian drum). More trancendental raga/fusion greatness!

"There are strong links between this group and John McLaughlin's recently reconstituted Shakti. Bassist Jonas Hellborg was once a member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and percussionist-vocalist V. Selvaganesh is a member of the current Shakti. Like that group, this trio--with Hellborg's regular partner Shawn Lane...

A great bassist and an amazing guitarist unite with 3 Indian musicians for an album of Indian-influenced world-fusion. This is great stuff.

Incredible improvised fusion album from the 1995 from the late (amazing) guitarist Shawn Lane, bassist Jonas Hellborg and drummer Jeff Sipe. Recorded live, this is a hot one all the way through!

An early collaboration from 1994 between Hellborg and Lane, with fine drumming by Kofi Baker as well, although who can match Shawn when he gets going? This has been out of print for a number of years and has been remixed and remastered for this reiss...

"Thought to be lost forever, Hellmet's legendary 1970 LP is the proto-metal find of the century. Long rumoured to exist amongst hardcore prog collectors, it used to be considered as the missing VO5 Vertigo cata!ogue number.
In 1970, two acetates were cut at Oak studios (a 12” and a 7”) and then promptly lost, and those who knew of its rumoured existence decided it was mere myth or permanently lost or destroyed. But in 2021, this doom-laden metal psych masterpiece finally emerges from the Stygian...

Really nice album by an up-and-coming Turkish composer. "Altered Realities is an album of solo acoustic guitar and live electronics. All of the compositions were recorded in real-time, directly to DAT (Digital Audio Tape) without any overdubs, mixing, ...

Lucca Fries: piano
Jonas Ruther: drums
“The dense waves of intensity are no obstacle to the Hely duo of pianist Lucca Fries and drummer Jonas Ruther laying down some seriously hypnotic music. It’s the way that little melodic changes reveal themselves from within a dense fog of repetition that serve up one delightful moment after the other, and it’s the kind of thing that will transfix a person’s attention and almost make them oblivious to any dissonance or chaos in the surrounding area of a...

An original member of the legendary Black Artists Group (St. Louis' counterpart to the AACM), and founder of the World Sax Quartet, Julius Hemphill was one of the most important composer/performers in creative music. His work is marked by a sharp, edgy...

"In response to the arguably self-righteous pronouncements made in the 1990s as to what jazz is and isn't, Julius Hemphill (1938?1995) spoke up as he had done throughout his career. 'Well, you often hear people nowadays talking about the tradition, tradition, tradition. But they have tunnel vision in this tradition. Because tradition in African- American music is wide as all outdoors.' This collection of music, this celebration of artistic collaborations that engaged Julius Hemphill throughout his life...

First released in 1967, Watch The Stars is a remarkable long-lost gem from the mid-sixties British folk revival. A beautiful collection of folk, blues and haikus, the album melds a folk-boom topicality with a fine 'beat' sensibility; uniting the Afro-A...

"Henderson recorded just a couple of albums as a featured artist, and those were way back in the 1960s, 35 years before the appearance of this 2003 release. Certainly her repertoire remains wide, including the folk, blues, and jazz standards "Wayfaring...

Joe Henderson-tenor sax
Chick Corea-piano
Ron Carter-bass
Billy Higgins-drums

This is an acoustic outing from 1980 by the great tenor saxist and a truly all-star outfit about a decade before Joe's late career stardom when he signed to Verve.

"The music is a perfect document of Henderson at his artistic peak, playing his heart out with his usual virtuosity. Although basically a mainstream Bebop album, there are many moments on this album where the quartet moves into Free, wi

“Band of Gypsys was the only live recording authorized by Jimi Hendrix before his death. It was recorded and released in order to get Hendrix out from under a contractual obligation that had been hanging over his head for a couple years. Helping him out were longtime friends Billy Cox on bass and Buddy Miles on the drums because the Experience had broken up in June of 1969, following a show in Denver.
This rhythm section was vastly different from the Experience. Buddy Miles was an earthy, funky.....

This is some of the fabulous recordings that the Jimi Hendrix Experience made for the BBC as they were starting out and then as they were getting huge.
Excellent mono sound from the original masters and great, happy, performances by the entire band. Some of the material is very unexpected and never recorded anywhere else and there's a lot of the well known pieces as well.
If I had to choose only one posthumous collection of studio recordings by Jimi, this is the one. Utterly essential.

"After only being available in heavily edited or bootleg form, Jimi Hendrix's complete performance at the Isle of Wight Festival (1970) was finally officially released some 32 years after the fact. Although Hendrix is plagued by equipment problems and audience expectations, and the entire festival had degenerated into something of a debacle by the time Jimi hit the stage as headliner, the sound is fantastic, the packaging and booklet are filled with great photos, and it is the entire performance...

48 years after his death, this is a surprisingly very good trawl of nearly all previously unreleased material!

"Both Sides Of The Sky presents 13 studio recordings including 10 which have never before been released. All but two of these studio recordings were made during a fertile two year period between January 1968 and 1970. Jimi’s mastery of the studio and his increasing use of them as a proving ground for new songs resulted in a growing collection of extraordinary material. Both Sides Of The...

This Experience show is a long-time favorite of mine and is a fine early-mid period show in excellent soundboard sonics.

"When Jimi Hendrix and The Experience headlined at L'Olympia, Paris in January 1968, it was only fifteen months since the...

Wired on adrenalin and other stuff too, this is the Experience at an early peak, playing before the largest audience they had ever played for and determined to live up to the pre-show hype and break big in the US. They did. It's an amazing performance and the sound as remixed from the original multi-tracks is really state of the art live & loud 1967, with Mitch's fabulous drumming very audible.

"The Jimi Hendrix Experience's breakthrough appearance at the Monterey International Pop Festival on...

This is not one of Jimi’s greatest performances & it isn’t the expanded complete performance that fits over two CDs (and which this version is superior to, imo, by leaving off the very weakest parts of the performance) but it is definitely his most famous performance, and the review below tells you what you need to know.
“The Woodstock show was supposed to be a headline performance for Hendrix and his band, but after many delays and a fan exodus, the guitarist ended up playing to only a fraction of...

"The seven tracks included in here are taken from the gigs that Jimi Hendrix and The Experience performed in Copenhagen between 1968 and 1970. Never officially released until now, these rare audience recordings are made up of the whole of...

This is – finally, 50 years later – the entire soundtrack of the two shows that Jimi Hendrix recorded in Maui on July 30, 1970. These shows have been oft-bootlegged and you can see a bit of the footage in the absolutely hideous timepiece film “Rainbow Bridge”, but here both excellent shows are, newly mixed from the masters and a blu-ray of both shows! This is one of the late period great shows and is very worthwhile.

“Experience Hendrix announces a collection that couples the brand new feature...

"As the '60s came to a close, Jimi Hendrix pushed the boundaries of funk, rock and R&B with a brand new group, Band of Gypsys. Together with bassist Billy Cox and drummer Buddy Miles, Hendrix unveiled stunning, newly written material across four shows at the legendary Fillmore East in New York City. Machine Gun: The Fillmore East First Show 12/31/69 marks the first time Band of Gypsys' first show has ever been released in its entirety, newly mixed by Eddie Kramer from the original 1" eight-track masters....

So...on February 24, 1969the Jimi Hendrix Experience played its last show ever at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
The show was filmed and the film was never released and actually has never been seen in complete form, but the soundtrack of the film came out on two volumes of widely seen and imported budget lp releases.
Despite (or because of) the fact this was the last show and the band knew it was the last show, they play a very good set, for the most part, based on the 50' of recorded evidence.

“’I love your shirt" opens the album with a quick-changing sequence of contrasting textural exchanges. A sound rather like a kitten's mew counters a fuzzy eruption, then a pipe-scouring squall counters an elongated burr, setting up a dynamic of call and response, which suggests that one either musician relies upon a jazz-rooted sound palette, their shared backgrounds in jazz still influence their understanding of musical interaction.
The duos exchanges are sufficiently spirited that you might even...

Three eccentric sketching women who succeeded in converting the concert hall into a spectacle with a drowned diesel engine on a race track, although it did not turn into a crazy fair. No, it was primarily an ode to the ingenious freedom, an intensely varied and colorful performance that was permeated by fun and games, but one of the kind that made your feelers and imagination run wild by its fresh originality, abrasive...
