"Sarah Louises music is spiritually and tangibly set apart from her peers, her 12-string compositions culled from birdsong and rivers as well as the sacred drone of Appalachian folk music. - NPR Music, Songs We Love Praised by Pitchfork as one of the most exciting figures in solo guitar music masterful 12-string guitarist and vocalist Sarah Louise integrates elements of drone, spiritual jazz, and minimalism into her compositions. Her Thrill Jockey debut Deeper Woods is her first album to prominently....

“Following a series of highly acclaimed solo guitar albums, Nighttime Birds and Morning Stars is Sarah Louise’s most fearless work to date. Louise broadens beyond folk forms, turning streams of raw electric guitar into entire oceans of aural texture. Her rich playing is warped beyond recognition through inventive synthesizing and digital manipulations. The innovative songs mine...

"Scandal marks the first time that trumpeter Dave Douglas and saxophonist Joe Lovano have recorded a full studio album of material together, revealing a passionately adventurous band for whom no territory is off-limits. The super group heads off into swinging, heartfelt and sophisticated new territory inspired by saxophonist giant Wayne Shorter. Two of Shorter's pieces...

“Saxophonist/guitarist/composer/music historian/ provocateur Allen Lowe spans the history of jazz in his music in a way that few besides Jaki Byard, Beaver Harris, Steven Bernstein, and Air have ever done, intertwining blues, early jazz, bebop, and the avant-garde.
A prolific composer who was incorporating American roots music into his jazz decades before it was hip, he has led project bands featuring a broad array of jazz greats ranging from Doc Cheatham, Randy Sandke, Joe Albany, Don Byron, Ken....

"This historical session, recorded in 1973 for ESP-Disk, was tenor saxophonist Frank Lowe's debut as leader and is one of his most electrifying earlier efforts. Black Beings features all original Lowe material, with Joseph Jarman on alto and soprano...

I love Frank Lowe’s more inside dates, of which this is one of the last and a real great one with a wonderful band of some surprising folks (Bertha??!!!).

“Warehouse find of the last copies of this long unavailable 2001 release Soul Folks is a live date from 1998, a celebration of Frank Lowe's lyrical side. The group explodes with raw beauty and emotion. There is a sweet soul that enraptures you upon listening as the music swings -- hard. Featuring Bertha Hope (piano), Jack Walrath (trumpet)...

“Warehouse find of the last copies of this long unavailable 2001 release. Frank Lowe and Billy Bang pay tribute to the late Denis "Jazz" Charles with studio date One For Jazz. The three musicians worked together extensively in their '70s group The Jazz Doctors. Bang and Lowe pay tribute to their old friend by playing some serious music. Nobody plays like Bang or Lowe; they need the heavy rhythm section of Ed Schuller on bass and Abby Rader on drums to balance them out. People are still talking about....

"For the twelfth volume of FRKWYS, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe and Ariel Kalma offer We Know Each Other Somehow. Recorded outside of Mullimbimby, a remote community on the eastern Australian coast, the album pairs two synth voyagers for six extended evocations of environmental ambience and entrancing naturalism. Accompanied by Sunshine Soup, a feature length documentary based on the intergenerational collaboration, We Know Each Other Somehow summons another world in an otherworldly part of the planet."

“The sound of the violin is a product of tension and release; the hair of the bow pulls back the violin’s string over and over again and, when the tension gets too great, it releases. The resulting vibration disturbs the air around it which travels in waves, exciting our ear drums and becoming sound. This confrontation of energy with air—the alternation of potential and kinetic energy—occurs over and over again in microcosm: catching, holding, tensing, and releasing. As listeners, however, we only...

“This offering could be depicted as a pulsating mist of near static incandescent vapor. Spiral Reflector starts things off with Lubelskis briskly bowed violin drone taking the fore, backed by Naces subtle volume swells and amplifier manipulation. Mazed finds the duo further probing at the veil. The modulated drones interweave in an unsteady interplay of dipping intonation that is both fascinating and disorienting. In Re/Fract/Ed Nace provides a subtle underpinning of persistent tremolo to Lubelskis gruff...

"In 1991 the chief draw to these tapes would have been the acclaimed former Magic Band guitarist Gary Lucas. Now, of course, the presence of a 25-year old Jeff Buckley who was yet to make his recording debut is of overriding interest and the reason for these shelved demos, radio broadcasts, club performances and studio sessions recorded between August 1991 and April 1992 seeing the light of day. One of the major voices of his generation, he was sadly only to live another five years and to produce only...

"Pogus is extremely delighted to release this 2 CD set of recordings of works by Alvin Lucier. He is one of the key experimental artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, and is one of my favorite composers. A unique and individual artist: No one sounds...

“Orpheus Variations is a new composition by Alvin Lucier for solo cello and seven wind instruments. It is based on a particular sonority from the first movement of Igor Stravinsky's ballet score, Orpheus; a sonority that has haunted Lucier for decades. Orpheus Variations is one of eight large-scale compositions made expressly for Charles Curtis by Alvin Lucier in the last 15 years. This performance was conducted by Petr Kotik, with Charles Curtis playing solo cello alongside members of the SEM Ensemble."...

“The recently composed "Ricochet Lady" (2016) is the only work for solo acoustic glockenspiel by the American experimental composer Alvin Lucier. Following in the manner of his pieces "I Am Sitting In A Room" and "Vespers", "Ricochet Lady" embodies Lucier's approach toward sound's individual function and mobility within space. This CD defines this approach through four realizations recorded in four dissimilar spaces, ranging from the standard to extraordinary: a university rehearsal hall with walls of...

“String Noise presents three major works for violin solo and duo composed between 2004 and 2019. Lucier has developed his compositions in close collaboration with many instrumentalists over the years; the three works presented here are performed by the violinists for whom they were originally written, Conrad Harris and Pauline Kim Harris, who together make up the innovative violin duo String Noise, and have premiered works by a plethora of major figures in contemporary music.
The long-form...

"A trailblazing force in psycho-acoustic music, avant-garde composer and performer Alvin Lucier was born in Nashua, New Hampshire in 1931; educated at Yale and Brandeis, he also spent two years in Rome on a Fulbright Scholarship before returning to Brandeis in 1962 to teach and conduct the university's chamber chorus. His breakthrough composition, Music for Solo Performer (1964-65) for Enormously Amplified Brain Waves and Percussion, was the first work to feature sounds generated by brain waves in live...

The band with Chris Tordini and Nasheet Waits is now a quartet, with Greg Ward playing the second saxophone and Kenny Grohowski taking the

Luna Park Ensemble were a part of the same school of wonderful, twisted art-pop-experimental bands that all seemingly emerged from nowhere in the early/mid 80s from Tokyo, along with Wha-Ha-Ha, Syzygys and After Dinner. Luna Park Ensemble were absolutely as good as these bands, the only difference being that Wha-Ha-Ha, Syzygys and After Dinner had records released outside of Japan, and Luna Park Ensemble did not, leading to them being much less known here.
This collects all of the material that was...

"Riverside frontman Mariusz Duda’s 5th solo album presents a stripped back and calmer version of his Lunatic Soul work. Despite the occasional off lyric, Fractured has a strong claim to ‘masterpiece’ status, and is worth more than the hours’ worth of time it will take you to listen to it.
There is a distinctly different style here than on Lunatic Soul’s previous work, Walking on a Flashlight Beam. There is some influence from Riverside’s latest record, Eye of the Soundscape, a mostly ambient and...

"For the first time on CD the complete 80s decade music of Hans Lundin (Kaipa), partly remixed and all high-end remastered in 2018.
Hans Lundin released three solo albums in the 80s. TALES in 1984, VISIONS OF CIRCLES OF SOUNDS in 1985 and HOUSES in 1989. With a childlike sense of wonder Hans created his own musical landscapes switching back and forth between grand majestic beauty and tiny joyful playfulness. He also never forgets his talent in writing beautiful melodies and creating special moods...
