In the 70s, there was a Milan-based musical co-operative called "L'Orchestra", that is probably best known for having released the Stormy Six catalog and the final Piccio dal Pozzo album, but they also released many other things, including the Italian editions of releases by Etron Fou, Henry Cow, Art Bears, etc and were closely aligned with the folks in the original RIO movement.

One of those 'other things' was a band called Mamma Non Piangere, who put out two albums towards the end of....

“MAN from Merthyr Tydfil are probably the most senior band from Wales at the moment. Founded in 1968 from the members of the rockgroup The Bystanders, MAN developed a very independently mixture of progressive and psychedelic rock, blues and elements of US Westcoast rock. Live, MAN was/is known for their excessive jams in the spirit of US colleagues like the Grateful Dead or the Allman Brothers.
After a series of very successful LPs, MAN split up in 1977 due to differences of opinions about their....

From the ashes of the mythical Argentine duo Sandhy & Mandhy—who recorded in 1969 the intensely rare and beloved album “Para.

This Italian minor gem from 1976 - the 1st release on the Grog label - is quite scarse, rather unknown and has never been reissued before! The group was formed by ex-Garybaldi drummer Maurizio Cassinelli and the group was Franco Sandi (guitar, vocals)...

This is the first release by a six piece group plus guests who use vocals, guitars, Chapman stick, Moog, bass, saxes, violin, viola, cello, string bass, bass, percussion and drums. What does it sound like? Well, it sounds like many things but it also doesn't sound like anything you've ever heard before in this particular combination. Really smart and clever songs and production. Very modern, very song form and very much its own thing.

“Daniel Mandrychenko is a guitarist and a member of the Bay Area jazz community. For his debut, Daniel chose producer Adam Munoz, known for his work on multiple Grammy-nominated Bill Frisell records, as well as projects by Herbie Hancock, Joanna Newsom, Branford Marsalis and many more. Daniel assembled a crack team to accompany him on his debut album. Evan Williams (drums) has cut his teeth playing in the Bay Area’s vibrant jazz scene. Danny Castro (upright and electric bass) has played with T

"People have been bugging us for these for four years. Finally available on CD, remastered from the original tapes with the blessing of EMI Music Canada, this was the second Maneige album released in 1975. Featuring one of the great compositions of...

When ProgQuebec first started, one of my first requests to them was "can you reissue the two Harvest-label Maneige titles"? Maneige had a few periods and styles, but these two albums, their first two, were the most largely orchestrated (the band were a...

“Violist/improviser/composer Mat Maneri envisages his music as one of activity in stasis, or motion within stillness. His music continues from the lineage of master improvisers Paul Bley and Paul Motian with a sound that is distinctly his own and developed over years of discovery and practice. Maneris new recording, Dust, showcases his stirring playing alongside an ensemble of communicative and...

"Over the course of a quarter century career American violist Mat Maneri has “changed the way the jazz world listens to the violin and viola” (AllAboutJazz.com) and has established an international reputation as one of the most original and compelling artists of his generation. Maneri posses an immediately recognizable sound and approach which marries the distinct worlds of jazz and microtonal music in a fluid...

Recorded by Jim Clouse on November 13th 2017 at Park West Studios, Brooklyn, New York, USA.
Nearly 20 years after their only other duet album, "Gravitational System", Matt and Mat have felt the need to meet again to share and confront their respective musical experiences. To have matured does not mean that they have lost creativity and spontaneity; on the contrary, they can afford to put themselves in danger to push the music further. Control and...

“Warehouse find of the last copies of this long unavailable 2000 release. Light Trigger is studio recordings from 1998 by the duo of Mat Maneri (viola) and Randy Peterson (drums).
"The voicings on this album are incredible, serene, unnervingly beautiful, and at times ponderous with an almost painful deliberateness. The commitment to each other, the push/pull, the complete acceptance, warm/cold simple facts, illuminated prisms floating precariously above a high wire, compassionately sewn...

"The story unfolds in space, be it outer or inner. The path is dark, but the dog will lead the way, just like the hieroglyphs hewn in the eternal oak. The time has come. The claws of the machine accelerate as we thrust into the abyss. From here, a distant light grows like a faint sound from within - getting louder and louder until we realize - there will be no sleep this year. The journey ends where birds used to sing.

This is the first album by an Italian band who take their musical cues and inspiration from Genesis and the very best, early Marillion (back when they sounded like Genesis!). Bernardo Lanzetti (who was in P.F.M. and Acqua Fragile) even makes an appeara...

“An album that, once again, moves out of the path marked by the previous one, this happens because every creation of the band is the result of an ever changing journey, accelerated , mostly, by the events that occur inside the same band. It happened that the old membe

One long, developing 40’ mass of a album, this is at times comparable a bit with bands like Horse Lords and 75 Dollar Bill. “Erba Spontanea is an adventitious plant, a wild, almost hallucinogenic herb.
The four acts of this 40-minute play are an experience for the body and the senses. In the rumbling of the organ, the clawing of the two guitars and the tireless hammering of

"Phil Manley, founding member of the pioneering DC-trio Trans Am, and in-demand recording engineer (The Alps, Arp, Mi Ami, Moon Duo, Wooden Shjips) has recorded his debut solo album. Life Coach, a title inspired by Tony Williams Lifetime and Charles Bullen's Lifetones project, is a dynamic collection of instrumental songs composed, performed, and recorded entirely by Phil. While there are reflections of Phil's work in Trans Am, Oneida, The Fucking Champs, and Jonas Reinhardt that a listener familiar...

“At the age of 16 Carl Mann had a national hit. He followed up with another that used the same formula.
By 17 he was an alcoholic.
But he continued to amass an impressive oevre of recordings with many of the same excellent musicians. Rockabilly was a blend of Rock and Roll and Country and Carl Mann was among the best. To say the Sun label attracted and in most cases retained, at least for the key period in the growth of rockabilly, a high level of rock'n'roll talent is an understatement of the...

With the release of this recording by Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur (1911-1992) Dunya expands its Indian music series to take in another essential part of the musics vocal tradition. Less antique and austere than the dhrupad, Khayals is probably the most p...

What a great and pleasant surprise to see a new release by the great composer, Michael Manter, who has been impressing the musical world for 60 years with his distinctive, very dark hued music.
This features a small a

“Proximo is the third release from Mantra, a five piece prog rock band from Belo Horizonte in Brazil. The band has virtually no web presence so I can't really elaborate much about their history. What I know is that they are what I call a "kitchen sink" band - they have so many influences they wear on their sleeve that its like listening to a who's who of prog. Overall I'd categorize this as symphonic rock but there are some interesting moments like when they incorporate a ripping...

The third and wildest yet from this avant / new music power trio with ties to Zevious (they share bassist Johnny DeBlase).

"A wild instrumental power trio from Philly, these three manic music masters have released 2 albums to date and this...

I have seen these guys a couple of times and have always enjoyed them. They play a wild, powerful form of power-trio out-rock. These guys are jazz-trained, but rock-ready. If your taste runs towards tight and a bit brutal, this, their second album...

"Many Arms, the Philadelphia and New York-based trio is joined here by the Toronto saxophonist Colin Fisher for a hardcore shredfest that will burn your eyebrows off. Blending the intensity of Pharoah Sanders with the speed of Mick Barr and the...

This is the classic by this all star project including Eno, Bill MacCormick, Simon Phillips, Francis Monkman and the never-heard-from-again Lloyd Watson. If you are of a certain age, said the man of a certain age, then this was certainly a big part of the soundtrack of your life circa 1976/1977.

“Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera and Andy Mackay. The saxophone and guitar heavy, ambient set captures the instrumental interplay and unique textural sounds for which Manzanera and Mackay have come to be known for.”

“During the UK’s 2020/2021 Covid Lockdowns I was working on songs with Tim Finn but I also had an urge to do some spontaneous instrumental music. I rang Andy Mackay and asked if he would be interested in working on an album together, he was, and thus the AM PM album was started. After...

“A rare opportunity to create the album arose during Chadbourne's 2022 visit to New York City. This led to a fortunate recording session where nothing was planned and everything was recorded without amps, making each listening experience as pristine as if it were the first time the album has ever been played through speakers. Maoz has long been a fan of Chadbourne, admiring his direct, no-consequences approach to creating sound. Eyal is experimenting here with a partly new set of pedals, while Eugene...
